musings, Labor Day 2013

Sept 2, 2013.
Labor Day, Monday.

Today feels like an important day.

It's the official last day of Summer. In honor of the season I spent the afternoon at Raleigh's Optimistic pool. For some reason, this is the only City pool that has lounge chairs instead of those cheap uncomfortable white plastic chairs.

I felt the light become more indirect, indicating late afternoon turning into early evening. But it's not just the day that is coming to a close - it's this whole beautiful season. Slanting light on my face. Turning my nice lounge chair away from the divers (putting on a show) and towards the light to catch its fleeting warmth. One last time.

And while I was sitting beside the water, a 64 year old woman was coming out of it in Florida. She had started her swim in Cuba. She had started her swim 35 years ago. She had attempted it and failed not once, not twice, but four times before.

Upon arriving on shore and before letting the medics at her, this is what she said:

Three things:

1.  Never ever give up.
2.  You are never too old to chase your dreams.
3.  It looks like a solitary sport, but it's a team.

Diana Nyad, I salute you for being all of these things. And much more I am sure. Your emotion touched my heart -- not only today but last year when you cried with frustration over leaving the water due to jellyfish stings. Congratulations to you on your tremendous achievement today.
